Ask Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or your own agent about any part and get Catavera's enriched product data back in the conversation: titles, identifiers, UNSPSC codes, weights, dimensions, images and spec sheets.

What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use outside tools. Catavera publishes an MCP server; you add it to your assistant as a connector with one URL and a sign-in, and the assistant can then call Catavera for you when you ask things like:

"Look up 3M 2091 and give me the specs and a spec sheet link."
"Here are 40 part numbers from this email. Get me titles, UNSPSC codes and weights in a table."
"What's left on my Catavera plan this month?"

No code is needed. Each lookup is metered exactly like a Catavera API call, and your assistant shows you each tool call before it runs.

Server URL

https://mcp.catavera.com/mcp

Transport: Streamable HTTP (JSON-RPC 2.0 over HTTPS POST). There is nothing to install.

Development server. This page describes the development endpoint. The production server will have its own address (an MCP subdomain), shown here when it's live.

Add Catavera to your assistant

Sign-in is coming. One-click sign-in (OAuth) for Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants that require it isn't switched on yet. Until then, clients that let you set a header (Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, your own agent) connect with a Catavera API key: see Signing in.

Claude (web and desktop)

Open Settings › Connectors and choose Add custom connector. (On Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds it once for the organization.)
Name it Catavera and paste the server URL above.
Choose Connect, sign in to Catavera and approve the permissions you want to give.
In a chat, open the tools menu and make sure Catavera is on. Ask: "Look up 3M 2091."

Claude's custom connectors sign in with OAuth, so they work once Catavera sign-in is switched on.

Add the server for all your projects (--scope user) or share it with your team in .mcp.json (--scope project):

Terminal, with an API key

Use your key's client ID and secret from API › Keys, joined by a colon (or a one-hour at_... token from POST /v1/oauth/token). A test key reads the free sandbox; a live key uses your plan.

To keep the secret out of the file, put it in an environment variable and reference it in .mcp.json:

With sign-in switched on, leave out headers and Cursor will ask you to log in.

Any MCP client SDK (TypeScript, Python, C#, Java and others) can connect over Streamable HTTP with the server URL and an Authorization: Bearer header. Or call it directly; every request is a single POST:

Signing in

Catavera's MCP server is an OAuth 2.1 protected resource. A request without a token gets 401 with a WWW-Authenticate header that points your assistant at Catavera's sign-in details:

One-click sign-in (OAuth)

Your assistant opens the Catavera sign-in page (Google, Microsoft or an emailed link), then a consent screen listing what it may do: Look up items, Read your catalogs, See usage and, only if you allow it, Spend on enrichment. Tokens are issued for this server only and checked on every request.

Status: being set up; not available yet.

API keys (developers, while sign-in is being set up)

Send a Catavera API key as the bearer token, in either form:

Authorization: Bearer ck_test_...:cs_test_... — the key's client ID and secret joined by a colon (simplest for config files);
Authorization: Bearer at_... — a one-hour access token from POST /v1/oauth/token.

The key's scopes decide which tools work: items:read (look-ups), items:search, catalogs:read, usage:read and enrich:write (paid research). Test keys use the free sandbox and are never billed.

Tools

Catavera keeps the tool set small. Read-only tools never change anything; only request_enrichment can spend money, and it says so.

Finds one product in the Catavera Index by manufacturer and part number, or by GTIN/UPC/EAN barcode number, and returns its enriched record (title, identifiers, UNSPSC code, weight, dimensions, image and, on request, full specifications, media such as spec sheet links, and sources). Uses Catavera tokens from the customer's plan, based on the size of the data returned; a part that isn't found costs nothing.

Asks Catavera to research up to 10 parts that aren't in the Index yet, by manufacturer and part number. COSTS MONEY: $0.15 per part, charged only if the research finds the part (not-found parts cost nothing), and it counts toward the customer's spending cap. Each part is charged at most once. Parts already in the Index are returned straight away instead (using plan tokens like lookup_part). Research results appear later; check_back_after says when. Needs a paid plan and the enrich:write permission.

Every result has structuredContent (JSON matching the output schema) plus a short text summary. Product text such as descriptions comes from public sources and is cleaned before it is stored; treat it as data about the product.

Metering and billing

Same price as the API. A tool call that returns item data uses Catavera tokens exactly like the matching /v1 call: tokens = UTF-8 bytes of the item data ÷ 4, rounded up. Asking for fewer fields uses fewer tokens.
Free: parts that aren't found, list_my_catalogs, get_catalog_items and get_usage.
Research costs money: request_enrichment costs $0.15 per part, charged only if the research finds it, at most once per part, and it counts toward your spending cap.
Plan checks are the API's: no plan, an ended trial, a failed payment or a reached spending cap come back as a tool error with the same code and message as the API (no_active_plan, trial_ended, past_due, spending_cap_reached, trial_limit_reached).
What did that cost? Each result's _meta carries com.catavera/usage: tokens_billed, tokens_used_this_period, tokens_included and records_estimate_remaining. Your dashboard's API › Usage shows MCP use labeled by channel.
Sandbox: test keys (and the Catavera Sandbox connector) read the sandbox items and are never billed. Free-trial keys count successful items against the trial allowance.

Revoking access

Your dashboard's API › Connected assistants lists every assistant that has used your account through MCP: the client, the key or sign-in it used, its permissions, when it was last used, and its calls and tokens in the last 30 days. Revoke stops it on its next request. Revoking an API key also stops that key in the API.

Troubleshooting

What you see What it means

"Needs authentication" / 401 No token, or the key is wrong, expired or revoked. Check the header (Bearer client_id:client_secret), or sign in again. The WWW-Authenticate header's error_description says which.

403 with insufficient_scope The key or sign-in doesn't allow that tool, e.g. request_enrichment needs enrich:write. Create a key with the scope, or reconnect and allow it.

Tool error no_active_plan, past_due, trial_ended The account can't make billable calls right now. Fix it in Billing › Plan; free tools keep working.

Tool error spending_cap_reached The call would pass your monthly spending cap. Raise the cap or wait for the next period.

Tool error rate_limited or HTTP 429 Too many requests this minute; retry after the number of seconds given.

Error -32022 Unsupported protocol version Your client speaks an MCP revision this server doesn't. The error lists the supported ones; update the client.

Error -32020 Header mismatch A custom client sent Mcp-Method, Mcp-Name or MCP-Protocol-Version headers that don't match the body.

HTTP 403 origin_not_allowed A browser page on another site called the server. Browser-based tools need their origin allowed by Catavera.

HTTP 405 Only POST is supported (no GET stream, no sessions).

Protocol details

Revisions: 2026-07-28, 2025-11-25, 2025-06-18, 2025-03-26. The current revision is stateless: no initialize handshake, no sessions; clients may call server/discover. Clients that still open with initialize (2025-11-25 and earlier) are answered too, statelessly.
Transport: Streamable HTTP. One JSON-RPC message per POST (no batches); requests get application/json, notifications get 202. GET and DELETE get 405.
Capabilities: tools only (no resources or prompts yet). tools/list is the same for everyone and carries a cache hint.
Security: the Origin header is checked on every request (DNS-rebinding protection); tokens must be for this server (RFC 8707 audience) and are never passed on to other services.
Directories: a registry description is published at server.json (MCP Registry format).
